Making a crisis get attention

The worst scenario for an organisation that wants to generate a crisis for another is when no one takes any notice.

This is the problem for Green activists. Trundling up in fancy dress to protest at the HQ of some corporation or other. Yawn! Been there, done that…we are all now bored with that.

It didn’t take a ‘spoiler alert’ to know the outcome of the Trump impeachment trial. Together with Brexit, they became the most boring stories on earth.

So, when the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi (worth at least $25 million, incidentally) tore up Trump’s speech, it generated headlines and lots of pictures.

Forget about the reams of evidence over months; this turned a non-story into a story, and the media lapped it up. Fortunately, there were many photographers in just the right spot, getting a great angle. And wasn’t Nancy looking smashing?

As the Irish philosopher Johnson noted in the late 18th century, ‘If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, has it made a sound?’ 

The problem of course is that Mr Trump doesn’t care. In his mind, it would seem, all publicity is good publicity; hence his provocative tweets! 

Italian fashion magazines are specific on how to measure an outfit, asking: “But did it get attention?” On that basis, Nancy must be very pleased with herself on both her outfit, and her actions.
